بالرغم من أن مرض التوحد عند الأطفال يصعب تشخيصه قبل بلوغ الطفل 24 شهرا ، ولكن الأعراض تبدأ فى الظهور ما بين 12 و18 شهراً. وإذا تم تشخيص حالة الطفل على أنه مصاب بالتوحد ببلوغه الشهر الثامن عشر فيمكن للعلاج المكثف إعادة برمجة المخ وعكس الأعراض.

ومن هذه الأعراض، أعراض عامة تظهر مبكرا وتتمثل أساسا في غياب التصرفات الطبيعية وحضور غير الطبيعية. 

حيث لا يتمكن الطفل من النظر فى عين أمه مباشرة- لا يبتسم- لا يستجيب عندما ينادى باسمه أو عند سماع أى صوت مألوف- لا يقوم بمتابعة الأشياء أو الأغراض بعينيه- لا يستخدم أصابعه للإشارة أو القيام بالتلويح بيديه- لا يصدر أى صوت للفت الانتباه- لا يقلد حركات أمه أو تعبيرات وجهها- ولا تكون له أي مطالب أساسية. 

اسرعى بمراجعة الطبيب في الحالات التالية: 

- إذا بلغ الطفل ستة أشهر ولم يبتسم أو يظهر أى تعبيرات أخرى خاصة بإظهار الفرح والسرور. 

- إذا بلغ الطفل تسعة أشهر ولم يكن قد أصدر أى أصوات أو ضحكات أو أى تعبيرات بوجهه. 

- إذا بلغ الطفل 12 شهرا بدون أن يكون قد بدأ يستجيب عند مناداته باسمه، أو لم يبدأ في التلفظ بأي كلام. 

- إذا بلغ الطفل ستة عشر شهرا بدون أن يكون قد نطق أى كلمة 

- إذا بلغ 24 شهرا ولم يكون جملا من كلمتين على الأقل، ولا تتضمن تلك الجمل تقليدا أو تكرارا للكلام
