Muslim women’s group to raise funds for Auburn's Little Tree Preschool
The
Auburn-Opelika Muslim Women Association is hosting a fundraising picnic
lunch Sunday to benefit The Little Tree Preschool in Auburn, which
caters to special-needs children.
The
event, to be held at the Donald E. Davis Arboretum from noon to 2 p.m.,
will offer authentic Pakistani-Indian food, music and henna
hand-painting.
Some
members of the group also belong to the International Women for Peace
and Understanding, which hosted a fundraising dinner for the school
Saturday.
“Initially
we (IWPU) had selected two other local nonprofits as our recipients,”
said Nighet Ahmed. “But … we felt that the kids and families at the
preschool would suffer immensely if Little Tree was to shut its doors.”
Ahmed is also a member of the Muslim Women group, which is hosting this Sunday’s picnic lunch.
“We
discussed the possibility of hosting a community picnic to raise funds
and public awareness for the Little Tree,” Ahmed said. “We had hosted a
similar fundraising picnic for the American Red Cross last year to raise
funds for super-storm Sandy affectees.”
Ahmed
said planning this picnic had to be timed around people’s various
spring break schedules, but they finally set a date that is accessible
to many people in the community.
“We
have another group of women excited about a fundraising picnic this
time,” Ahmed said of AOMWA. “There will be plenty of food and
entertainment for both adults and kids. There will be a clown, a
drumming group and opportunity for henna hand-painting.”
Donations
are suggested at $10 per adult, $7 per student and $5 per child. All of
the event’s proceeds will go to The Little Tree Preschool.
